The Edge 05/03/2018

Wombwell Ings - Finally saw the Firecrest  in the hawthorns near the sluice gate on the R.Dearne. With a Yellow Browed Warbler and Goldcrest being in the same series of bushes, it is certainly worth a visit. Also present on a  70% ice-covered flash  but snow-free ings were 10 Mute Swans, 2 Shelduck, 102 Wigeon, 22 Teal, 10 Gadwall, 9 Mallard, 6 Shoveler, 3 Tufted Duck, 2 Goosander, 2 Grey Heron, 1 Little Egret, 5 Coot, 3 Moorhen, 48 Lapwing, 16 Golden Plover, 124 BH Gull, 4 Common Gull, 4 Skylark, 11 Fieldfare, 7 Redwing and 2 Stonechat. A Pink Footed Goose and a Barnacle Goose could be seen amongst 35 Canada Geese and 32 Greylag in the field to the north east of the R.Dearne bridge.
Bolton Ings - 50% ice covered. On the open water were 2 Mute Swan, 3 Greylag, 2 Canada Geese, 1 White Fronted Goose, 18 Tufted Duck, 10 Shoveler, 8 Gadwall, 6 Pochard, 5 Mallard, 2m+3f Goldeneye, 2 Goosander, 2 Wigeon, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Little Grebe, 208 Coot, 45 BH Gull, 3 Common Gull and 2 Herring Gull. Also present were 1 Grey Heron, 23 Buzzard, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Kestrel, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Marsh Tit, 1 Willow Tit and 2 Bullfinch. Ivan Martin had 3 Redpoll on the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT).
