Lower Dearne Valley - Sunday 6th December 2015

Adwick Washland

Started out this morning at Adwick, fortunately arrived just after a heavy shower passed through so avoided a soaking. The wind was still blowing strong but soon died down and with a temperature of 13c the weather was very unseasonable. Highlight today was 3 Little Egrets, plenty of wildfowl with the following counts - Wigeon 46, Teal 95, Gadwall 14 and Shoveler 9. Only 1 Lapwing was seen down but c80 flew over, a Common Gull was in with the Black Heads.

Old Moor

Onto Old Moor this afternoon primarily for the roost, arrived mid afternoon so spent some time on the Mere. The water level is high on the Mere, "Death Island" is submerged so the Cormorants are using other Islands. Loads of wildfowl on the Mere but I could only pick out 1 female Goldeneye. Onto the Wader Scrape where there were 2 Shelduck and 5 Goosanders finally building up to 18 roosting birds. A Barn Owl was hunting on the Reedbeds and another was at the bottom end of the Main Marsh. A good roost tonight, the first Sunday for a few weeks with decent weather. A total of 20 Cormorants with a further 4 flying down to Denaby, 7 Little Egrets roosted tonight with the 3 from Adwick coming in about 15.30. A Redshank was on the Main Marsh as were 11 Snipe, the Ruff hasn't been seen since Thursday.

Other birds seen in the area today included 4 Whooper Swans briefly at Broomhill, an adult Kittiwake at Old Moor late morning, 3 Cettis Warblers on the Reedbeds and a Bittern seen several times this afternoon also on the Reedbeds.
