Old Moor Nocturnal Report

Arrived late again tonight so went straight to Wath Ings hide, as last night 21 Little Egrets were counted coming into roost. 2 birds were already in when I arrived and the others came in as follows :- 6 @ 20.43, 2 @ 20.45, 2 @ 20.46, 1 @ 20.59, 2 @ 21.15, 1 @ 21.23, 2 @ 21.24, 1 @ 21.38, 1 @ 21.40 and finally 1 @ 21.52. All the Egrets came in from up the valley tonight and as previous nights the last one's in appear to be juveniles.

I could have missed some Egrets tonight as I was distracted by a Hobby putting on a fine show, first picked up chasing waders on the Main Marsh and then settling in Slag Willows. Disturbed by about a dozen Magpies and then had an aerial battle with them for about 10 minutes and eventually lost to view over Bolton. The target for the Hobby was mainly a LRP which escaped, also on the Main Marsh was Black Tailed Godwit 1, Snipe 6, Green Sandpiper 1 & Redshank 2 adults + 3 juveniles. The Shoveler broods are still surviving and a Barn Owl was hunting.
