Not the Nocturnal Report - Saturday 16th August

Decided to check the Little Egret roost on Saturday morning, that meant an early start, a very early start.  Up at 04.30 I was in position in the Wath Ings hide at 04.55, still dark the roost was quiet. At 05.10 2 Grey Herons flew out of the roost and the Little Egrets started calling. At 05.23 the first 8 Egrets flew out, followed by 6 at 05.26, 2 at 05.28, 4 at 05.29, 3 at 05.31 and the last 2 at 05.33. The 25 Egrets had all left the roost in ten minutes, 20 left up the valley and 5 down the valley.

Also seen were Greenshank 3, Ruff 1, Common Sandpiper 6, Green Sandpiper 7, Little Ringed Plover 3, Black Tailed Godwit 12, Golden Plover 3, Dunlin 1, Yellow Wagtail 1, Chiffchaff 1 singing, Sand Martin c650.

Went to the Bird Fair at Rutland Water later and only saw 2 Little Egrets, thats rubbish. Heard that the roost on the Ouse Washes was a bit better with 299 counted last week.
