Carlton Marsh

A tentative walk round this morning revealed a really big flock of about 150 Siskins, Redpoll and Goldfinch with a few Greenfinch. (Rod Heeley)
This afternoon was still bitterley cold. (-0.5c in my garden at 13.00hrs)  The scrape was 100% ice except for a small hole created by our resident Mute Swans and a Coot.  9 Mallard and 2 Teal were stood on the ice.  A kingfisher flew from the dike and 2 Water Rails called from the marshy areas.  Little Owl was on is usual perch and 80 Fieldfare, 10 Redwing and c20 Starlings were on the adjacent fields. Great Spotted Woodpecker, Treecreeper and 2 Jays were evident and the mixed finch flock containing mainly Lesser Redpoll and Siskin were in the car park plantation.  As night fell 3 Snipe moved off and a dog Fox walked on to the ice and scent-marked on one of the islands before back-tracking without bothering the swans and duck.
