Bolton Ings - 16th December

A late start today, around 1 pm when I finally made an apearance. Weather seemed mild at 9c but the paths were still icy and overnight frost lingered. The western pool was 50% ice but the eastern pool was completely ice free. Very quiet today, not helped by my lateness, highlight probably 6 Goldeneye (3 drakes) and Gadwall 92. No raptors seen today nor Green Woodpecker for the first time this year. Full list:- Grey Heron 6, Mute Swan 7, Canada Goose 143, Grey Lag Goose 12, Cormorant 2, Little Grebe 2, Mallard 25, Teal 5, Gadwall 92, Shoveler 10, Tufted Duck 10, Pochard 16, Goldeneye 6, Goosander 2, Coot 221, Moorhen 6, Black Headed Gull 48, Common Gull 14, Fieldfare 10, Redwing 40.

Went onto Old Moor afterwards and counted 35 Goosanders roosting tonight, 19 on Wader Scrape and 16 on Mere. Also 2 Redshank on Wader Scrape and 3 Snipe came off Field Pools.
