THE NEWS

Today:  Old Moor = Pintail, Little Stint 3, Curlew Sandpiper 1, Spotted Redshank 2, Ruff 2, Grey Phalarope 1 arrived on Mere late morning and remained until dusk, GBB Gull 2

Adwick Wash = 2 Little Egret, Yellow Wagtail.

A couple of Keith Pickerings shots below of today's Grey Phalarope on The Mere complete with rain. That's two Grey's and two Red-necked's this year - have we got a secret breeding colony somewhere!

Yesterdays highlights: 3 Little Stints, 2 Curlew Sands', 22 Dunlin. Counts from Warbler Way were 22 Chiffchaffs, 12 Blackcaps, Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, 4 Goldcrests, 25 Siskins, 15 Lesser Redpolls.

And Saturday: Osprey, 2 Marsh Harriers, Baird's Sandpiper, a juvenile spent about an hour on Wath Ings before being flushed by a Hobby and sadly did not return. Assuming acceptance by BBRC this will be the second Barnsley area record following a juvenile at Broomhill Flash on 5th and 6th September 1995.

I am generally kept well informed of what's happening at Old Moor over the weekends, however, unfortunately the very poor phone signal at Spurn (where I normally reside March - Nov) is not good enough for me to update this blog, so it is up to someone else to make an effort.

Your contributions on here are very much appreciated.
And so is the contribution of birders such as:
Alan Whitehouse
Grey
Ken F
And that bloke from Barnsley who thinks he's from Sheffield

Without these contributors we wouldn't know what was happening in the valley.
I can't get down to Old Moor as often as I would like because of other commitments - usually work related. So I consider this website and the Birdguides website as very important and check them on a regular basis.
I have often asked the RSPB Old Moor staff why they do not put news out on websites such as Birdguides etc. Surely bird information websites are the RSPBs shop window so they can encourage more people to visit Old Moor.
News = more people visiting = more money spent in the cafe and shop = more money for conservation work in the valley.
Only the Bairds was reported on Birdguides over the weekend. All the other stuff wasn't reported.

It really is ironic that one of the people who visit this site most often, yes you Chris, is the cause in the decline of birders posting their sightings here. I know of 2 birders who used to contribute but no longer do due to your often rude and nasty comments. Others have said they would post if you are removed from being able to comment. If you want more news on here, as we all do, then it might help if you keep some of your thoughts to yourself.

Unbelievable - you give a guy a compliment about his contribution on here and he returns this by saying you are nasty. Unbelievable.
And some might be prepared to sit and watch (day after day) relatively nothing but open water and just comment on how 'disappointed they are with the water levels' while others will actually try to do something about it. No matter how much hassle it causes them.
That's not being rude - that's stating a fact.
This could actually be a cultural thing of how birders have been brought up i.e. Wintersett team just expect to see a sea; old Wath lads don't.
As for some of your mates that are taking to their beds because of comments from Young Nudger - jeez !!!
Are they actually that sensitive?

This is a good website and if people want to have a bit of birding banter on here to liven thing up then thats alright by me.
Overwise we will end up with just a list of birds which will look as dull as dish watter.
