The torrential rain for the last day has flooded out the flash for the second time this summer (summer?). The river breached the floodbank about 3 p.m. and very quickly started filling up the marsh,by 7p.m. it was a lake and by dusk it was getting close to capacity and up to river level. Once again lots of breeding birds have been washed out including numerous ducks, Coots and Reed Buntings.
Over the river at the adjacent Houghton Washlands, rain water has partially flooded the field but at 8 p.m. the river was not quite breaking over the banks here. However it was almost at the bank top and once Edderthorpe is full the next place is here, so with the river levels not due to begin falling until tomorrow there seems a good chance Houghton will flood too.
And birds;- Mute Swan 30, Common Sand 1, Oyc 1, Common tern 3, Med Gull 1 second-summer bird - presumably the semi-resident Old Moor bird, and hunting (or drying-off) Long-eared and Barn Owls.
